About & Methodology

Purpose

The Section 301 Tariff Impact Analyzer is designed to help AUTO XYZ analysts examine the effects of U.S. Section 301 tariffs on vehicle lineup, parts sourcing, and profitability under various policy scenarios.

Key Features

  • Synthetic Data Generation: All data is generated client-side for demonstration purposes
  • Scenario Analysis: Compare impacts of different tariff policies including Baseline, USMCA updates, Aggressive 301+, and Balanced Trade models
  • Interactive Filters: Analyze by date range, vehicle line, region, and country of origin
  • Cost Modeling: Detailed tariff calculations with USMCA non-U.S. content rules
  • Demand Sensitivity: Elasticity modeling for price-sensitive markets

Methodology

Tariff Application Logic

For each part imported:

  1. Determine base tariff rate by HS code and selected scenario
  2. Apply USMCA treatment for Canadian/Mexican content in qualifying vehicles
  3. Calculate assessed value based on non-U.S. content share where applicable
  4. Compute tariff amount as assessed value × effective rate

USMCA Non-U.S. Content Approach

For vehicles/parts qualifying under USMCA from Canada or Mexico with usmcaEligible=true:

  • Apply tariffs only to the non-U.S. content share (value × nonUSContentShare)
  • Duty-free parts remain exempt per careedge.com guidance

Balanced Trade Target (Δτ)

Stylized model inspired by USTR approach tariffs.inasimonovska.com:

  • Calculate bilateral trade deficit by country
  • Apply incremental tariff add-on up to +10 percentage points
  • Capped adjustments to model economic impact

Price Pass-Through & Demand Modeling

Impact of tariff costs on demand:

  • Segment elasticity: Sedan -1.2, SUV -1.0, Truck -0.8, EV -1.4
  • User-adjustable pass-through percentage (0% to 100%)
  • Price multiplier: units' = units × (price'/price)^(elasticity)
  • Final transaction price reflects margin adjustments

Risk & Emissions Tracking

Additional metrics include:

  • CO₂ emissions per vehicle (sum of part emissions)
  • Risk score (weighted sum of supplier concentration, China share, lead time, criticality)
